Artist Statement: Duke Nicholson

Screenwriting is a medium that is often overlooked, as the writing itself can seem insignificant and uninspiring. However, through a screenplay, one is able to create a world that is very tangible, and the reader can truly envision. With this piece, I aimed to do just that. I was focused on vivid creating images for the reader to directly experience. My goal was not rooted in creating an organized and traditional narrative, but rather an abstract collage. I did this because as a filmmaker, I am attracted to how free form the medium can be. It is important to me that I have a distinct voice that stands out from the one we commonly see in today’s mainstream cinema. In this specific project, I sought to combine a Cassavetes-esque realism with science-fiction. Often times in science- fiction we see a significant amount of time spent explaining what is unique about the world inhabited, but I was not interested in that. I want the reader/viewer’s experience to parallel the main character Bobby’s experience, lost in a world without any explanation.
