previous case. Over time, as it did with the student’s speech cases, clear cut restrictions can be found. There may never be a perfect description of what speech is legal and what is restricted, but as the United States continues to age, the laws will continue to be refined. For many, it is hard to hear things like hate speech and threats being dismissed as within one’s legal rights. However, there is a silver lining. The same rules allowing for hate speech protects the right to challenge anything a person may disagree with, including the right to hate speech in the first place. It is up to the individual to decide whether they are open to conversation, or are closed minded and don’t talk to anyone they disagree with. The hope is that the individual will both not abuse their free speech, and encourage others to talk with them, even if they disagree.
