Author’s Statement: Enrique Romero

How is this project a passion for me? I often ask the same question, what has led me down this path, I don't have a perfect answer but I can try to explain it. I think my art passion began when I moved to Puerto Rico. At the time I was around six; I did not really understand English or Spanish very well and that is what caused me to move to art. When I started school at American Military Academy I was unable to talk to anyone. Classes were confusing and the teachers had an extremely hard time communicating ideas when I could not understand what they were saying. I had to find a way to understand, understand where I was, what I was supposed to do and even try to understand the class schedules; I was locked in my own little world where everyone else was simply just trying to communicate. At this time I was learning Spanish and English, Spanish at school and English when I got home. It was a lot of work when I was only six years old. That's when I met a fellow student named Nati that found a way to speak to me - through drawings and illustrations. From then on I used drawings to communicate, to get my point across and send my message. The language of pictures is universal and that is the tool I will use to genuinely
