he is trying to help Alice navigate Wonderland or if he is playing tricks on her. The deception comes in other clear forms such as, the constant changing of heights and the baby really being a pig. But it also appears when the reader cannot tell between what is part of the story and what is a poem or story being recited by Alice. Throughout the novel, but especially towards the beginning, Alice recites to herself stories and rhymes (that are in themselves complicated and contain plays on words) in order to make sure she is not going crazy. She is trying to prove to herself that she still has these “basic nursery rhymes” memorized.
