Author’s Statement: Genevieve Dunning

Growing up, music was a huge part of my life, which was mainly influenced by my stepfather, Tk. I went to my first music festival, Coachella, when I was 11, and that is where I truly fell in love with what musicians can do and how their music can make you feel. Soon after, when I was 13, I began taking guitar lessons and started begging my parents to take me to more music festivals. These experiences broadened the types of music I listened to and liked, and it opened my perspective to new styles. This project allowed me to go deeper into my love for music by analyzing a specific artist and his two albums. When I first began listening to Frank Ocean, he was a different R&B rap singer than I had heard previously. He did not dehumanize women like most rap artists. He told a story throughout his first album, and it was a story of the human experience and the struggles we have to endure, as well as the blissful and beautiful moments. His voice was irresistible. This was very new to me, so I read articles in Rolling Stone Magazine for inspiration and quickly began formatting my passion piece. The look of this essay was very important to me. I wanted the reader to be intrigued by images and interesting quotes of Frank Ocean.
