WILDWOOD ATHLETICS News from the Wolf Den

our younger athletes has been a great way to prepare for the transition to middle/upper school sports. The boys had a fun season competing in the Coastal Canyon League. We fielded four basketball teams in middle school (three boys teams and one girls team). Our girls team advanced to the semifinals before losing a tight contest. They were led by the sharp shooting of 8th grader Zoe B., as well as the young talent of 6th graders Sadie C. and Laurel H. The boys A, B, and C teams played hard all season and had some great highlights, including an amazing buzzer beater by 8th grader Charlie M. in the first round of playoffs. With only two seniors on the varsity team, we were a young squad playing at a high level. Our JV team won their last five games, going undefeated in 2018. For the fourth year in a row, our girls varsity basketball team earned a berth to the CIF playoffs, coming in third in the Coastal League. They traveled to Catalina Island early in their season to play in the Avalon Classic, where they bonded as teammates and played four tough games to prep for league play. SOCCER Our girls middle school soccer team was rejuvenated with a committed group of players. With key victories over New Roads and Calvary Christian, they progressed as a team and had a lot of fun. They were led by the solid play of Molly R. and Zoe S. Our boys middle school soccer team finished the regular season undefeated and with only one tie. They advanced to the semifinals of playoffs where they battled in an overtime contest against the eventual champions. It was a tough loss, but a memorable season. Going up against some of the biggest and most established beach teams in the country, the boys fared well. WINTER SPORTS We had a fantastic winter in Wildwood athletics, wrapping up the season with a total of 167 participating in middle and upper teams of basketball and soccer and elementary teams of girls volleyball and boys basketball. Our program is flourishing as participation is at an all-time high. VOLLEYBALL Sixteen girls joined the 5th grade girls volleyball team. Coaches Reo Sorrentino and Darren Pasco and student coaches (varsity players) Lela S. and Kayla G. were excited to teach the game of volleyball to our younger Wolves. The girls worked on skill development, learned the rules of the game, and experienced competitive match play. It was a fun learning environment for everyone. BASKETBALL In our second year of 5th grade boys basketball, we had 17 boys come out for the team. These Wolves were coached by Pat Colley (varsity coach) with senior Nick S. (varsity player) working as his assistant. Our program of having upper school players work with
