Because I am in WISRD, I can really appreciate the Wildwood Habits as I see myself actively using them daily.” With all three Institutes established, the directors are encouraging more cross-collaboration among Institutes to further deepen members’ learning experiences. I am a former WISL member and current WIE member, applying the skills and knowledge I acquired in WISL to my social-justice-oriented project. During my time in WISL, I developed a deep passion for educational equity and aspired to create a project to aid low-income students whose education was adversely affected by the pandemic. Last year, I worked at a Title I elementary school with classes housing 40 children each. I remember many of the 1st graders were severely behind their reading level, especially my assigned buddy. She had lost confidence in her abilities and constantly stated that she was “too stupid to learn how to read.” I was eager to help struggling students like her, so I created an easy-to-follow curriculum that teaches parents how to read with their “” BECAUSE I AM IN WISRD, I CAN REALLY APPRECIATE THE WILDWOOD HABITS AS I SEE MYSELF ACTIVELY USING THEM DAILY. —IAN N. ‘22

young children for only 15 minutes a day. This curriculum re-instills confidence in kids and prepares children for short- and long-term educational success. As for the future of the Institutes, Liza Bearman, the director of WISL, Matt Lucas, the director of WIE, and Joe Wise, the director of WISRD, all acknowledge the vital role students play in shaping the evolution of the Institutes. Now with the new designated Institute spaces and the shift back to on-site learning, members are eager to rejoin the greater Los Angeles community and continue their journeys as lifelong learners.
