Our Wildwood, Volume 54
My memories of Landis include conversations in the front office, having him as an occasional classroom guest, during which he would quietly check in with a nearby student, and hearing the joyful chirp of his laugh rise above the mix.” WILL SCHAER ELEMENTARY FACULTY (2005-PRESENT)
Landis’ love of poetry will always stay with me. From specific full-text poems included in his letters to faculty to lines and titles woven into his remarks, Landis elevated a moment or an idea through the power of language, sharing his own poetic sensibility.” ANNIE BARNES UPPER SCHOOL FACULTY (2011-PRESENT)
At the institutional level, amid shifts in educational trends, upheavals in social circumstances, and reversals in the political landscape, Landis always steered Wildwood toward accomplishing its progressive mission. At the granular level, he went out of his way to let me know when students or parents expressed their appreciation for my teaching, which rejuvenated my spirit, strengthened my resolve, and helped me stay the course of our common cause. For each initiative he undertook, he ensured that a diverse set of community voices not only weighed in but also shaped the policies and principles enacted. Beyond securing buy-in, this offered the community ownership over its direction and development. More personally, I enjoyed our random hallway conversations, where we discussed recent podcasts, new books, or current events, traded recommendations for trails to hike, bistros to visit, and lodges to stay at on vacation, and shared more than a few jokes and witty asides.”
